The Challenge and Promise of a Catholic University by Theodore M. Hesburgh, Contemporary Catholic higher education finds itself at a crucial crossroad. The issues are many Doshisha University and complex. How is the Catholic character of the university to be preserved Doshisha University and fostered while avoiding secularization on the one hand Doshisha University and insular sectarianism on the other? Must a majority of the faculty in a college or department be Catholic? How is Catholic to be defined in terms of culture, belief, or practice? What is the level of commitment to intellectual inquiry Doshisha University and the possibility of dissent that must be present on a Catholic campus? These are some of the issues that prompted Fr. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., to write a position paper Doshisha University and invite 29 distinguished members of the faculty Doshisha University and administration at the University of Notre Dame to address as they strive to envision Doshisha University and create a great Catholic university. The contributors explore these issues from a wide variety of religious Doshisha University and academic perspectives, Doshisha University and although their backgrounds Doshisha University and fields of study differ widely, they agree on a number of points. First, a great Catholic university must begin by being a great university that is also Catholic. The University of Mississippi: A Sesquicentennial History by David G. Sansing, The University of Mississippi was established in the town of Oxford in 1848 so that the citizenry would have an alternative to sending Mississippi's young male gentry to the North or to England for collegiate education. The university's history has been linked to key events in the growth of the American nation Doshisha University and the national conscience. In the late 1850s, under the leadership of Chancellor Frederick A. P. Barnard, the university assembled perhaps the finest collection of scientific equipment in antebellum America. The institution reopened in 1865 after the war ended. Since 1897 the University of Mississippi has been known fondly as Ole Miss, a name derived from Ole Miss, the college yearbook. In the dosing decades of the nineteenth century Doshisha University and the first two of the twentieth century, the university evolved from a small liberal arts college with a prescribed classical curriculum into a university with a broader elective curriculum. But the development of professional schools notwithstanding, it retained many of the traditions Doshisha University and characteristics of the liberal arts college. In the late 1920s, after an unsuccessful attempt to move the university from Oxford to the more liberal state capital Jackson, Governor Theodore G.
